“Jo is incredibly experienced, not afraid to give her honest opinion and she gets straight to the point and always gets it – she listens, shows understanding and goes above and beyond with follow up. She’s a pleasure to deal with and never patronises. She ultimately has a clear passion for what she does and I have more confidence in her than any other health professional I have visited for any purpose. I wouldn’t trust my kids with anyone else for assessing and treating autism which is why we are such return customers. Please don’t ever retire!!! ”
(mother of 9 year old girl with the demand avoidant variant of autism, with a second daughter due assessment, Yorkshire, June 2017)
“We just wanted to say thank you both so much for seeing us all yesterday. Sorry for the blubbering, but think the relief of being finally listened too & recognising these things in Z just opened up the flood gates. Now we have had time to process things, we are feeling positive for the future & look forward to seeing your full reports detailing everything. Again thanks for yesterday, your both amazing!! ”
(parents of 6 year old boy with newly diagnosed autistic spectrum disorder and severe anxiety, Essex, June 2017)
“Jo is excellent. Spot on with her diagnosis which is thorough & professional. She is highly qualified & experienced. She demonstrates a pleasant & easy manner showing great understanding, empathy & support. She is superb in a crisis & responds immediately.
We would naturally highly recommend her as she has been a huge help to our daughter & us as a family. ”
(mother of 9 year old girl with complex past and ADHD, West Midlands, June 2017)
“Jo I just wanted you to know that from my point of view you achieved more with S in that hour than CAMHS have in a year! ..at last it feels as if we are getting some answers!”
(mother of 14 year old boy with as yet undiagnosed but evident high-functioning autism, serious self-harm and extreme anxiety, West Country, June 2017)
“I just wanted to send a personal thank you for today, along with all The explanation you went through with myself and J about D's areas of strength and struggles, It was an absolute pleasure to meet you. 😊 D was quickly calmed by your soft tone and allowing him time to come to you. ”
(mother of 10 year old boy with known autism and suspected ADHD and dyspraxia, Warwickshire, June 2017)
“I always feel so anxious about what to do for the best with Z. But whenever I see Jo or even correspond with her I immediately feel a weight is lifted & she totally understands, advises & supports both me & Z. She speaks to him directly & does everything possible to make him at ease . The key is she listens & then makes a plan accordingly. This has never happened before, particularly through the 5yrs we attended CAHMS.
The correspondence, emails, responses, reports are all sent in a timely manor & are detailed & excellent. I don’t have any thing that could be improved upon.”
(mother of 11 year old boy with ADHD and likely autism, West Midlands, June 2017)
“Hi Jo - thank you so much for yesterday - you were truly amazing with R. She is looking forward to starting and hopefully getting a little more mental calm! Many thanks again - it was a real pleasure to meet you! ”
(mother of 10 year old girl with newly diagnosed ADHD about to start treatment, Gloucestershire, June 2017)
“Jo provides the experience, reassurance, proactivity and consistency of care that is, in our experience, simply not available via the NHS any longer. Jo is also flexible with appointment locations and timings, which is necessary for parents to fit around work and also for children, especially as they get older, to fit around exams/school/college/driving lessons/part-time jobs etc. etc. Again, the NHS does not do this – recently we were forced to choose between J attending an NHS appt or resitting an exam. In the end, we chose the NHS appointment, as otherwise we would have been discharged from the service, when it had taken over a year to get the initial appointment! There was no empathy or understanding from the NHS about J’s resit exam, so we were forced to choose between health and education, which Jo Jones would never expect us to do. Jo has provided enormous support and understanding of our son’s medical problems and wider needs and has got to know us and him so we always have a feeling of overwhelming confidence when we see Jo. Jo is also very responsive and we can contact her outside of appointment time, and she always helps us, no matter how large or small the problem is. In response to problems/issues of a wide-ranging nature, Jo always does exactly what she says she will do within a day or two – this is so very reassuring and supportive at what can be stressful times. I could not possibly recommend Jo highly enough.”
(parents of 17 year old young man with autism and ADHD, West Midlands, June 2017)
“Lovely bedside manner, I liked it that everything was directed at E.
Straightforward explanations and treatment options.”
(mother of 11 year old girl with migraine, Warwickshire, June 2017)
“Jo was friendly, put D at ease, was able to make light of a sensitive subject, and gave us both her full attention for the full appointment time of 30 minutes. She took personal interest in D and was comprehensive and thorough in her examination. She asked that she be called Jo (again making it a more personal interaction). I know Jo has a long waiting list, but this is a sign of how good she is.”
(mother of 15 year old young man with chronic diarrhoea, Warwickshire, June 2017)
“Hello, I’d like to thank both yourself and Dr Nicki Mills for your work, enabling us to move on with our lives and start getting L’s needs met within education. I am hugely relived that the ball is finally beginning to roll in education, after battling the system for so long. So thank you very much for your work which will change our lives for the better. Warmest wishes”
(Mother of 8 year old girl with huge aggression now diagnosed with high functioning autistic spectrum disorder, Worcestershire, May 2017)
“C has been on his tablets for a little under two weeks. We have been impressed with him taking them without too much fuss. He seems okay, little change at home thus far, but a noticeable change at school, so much so we are a bit stunned. He has had a teacher's award, a head teachers award and a hand written note (unheard of,) from the HT in that time!”
(mother of 10 year old boy with newly diagnosed and treated ADHD, Coventry, May 2017)
“I would recommend dr jones to friends and family. When we walked in I could tell my son felt at ease. It was very welcoming and dr jones was very friendly and helped us feel at ease.
I found dr jones very thorough and her questions answered all of my questions if that makes sense. I had a list of pages and pages long but the way dr jones asked her questions I actually didn't need to refer to my lists of notes.
I wished we had gone private years ago.
I'm so thankful to dr jones. The melintone has worked wonders. Within half an hour of taking his tablet his eyes are heavy and he's yawning. He is asleep within an hour and a half. In the mornings he is awake with the family and eats breakfast with us and no more angery outbursts due to being so tired.
A big Thankyou .”
(mother of 12 year old boy with newly diagnosed autism and ADHD, plus Melatonin prescribed for chronic sleep issues, Worcestershire, May 2017)
“Jo is incredibly supportive and balances medical diagnosis with a thorough appreciation of the context of children’s lives and appreciates how diagnosis made affects family life. I have known Jo now for a number of years and her support, no nonsense approach, balancing empathy with pragmatism has un-wavered during this time. Jo is always at the end of an email should I need some advice and is incredibly generous with her time”
(mother of 15 year old boy with ADHD, Leicestershire, May 2017)
“From start to finish Dr Jones and her Team were excellent in both finding a time to see our daughter outside of normal clinic hours and with prompt communication throughout. All of our concerns were addressed during our consult and any queries we had, both during the consult, and after for clarification, were addressed very quickly which was brilliant. It made a stressful situation very manageable and has really helped us get to the bottom of our daughters intolerance.”
(mother of 3 month old baby girl with milk intolerance, Warwickshire, May 2017)
“We were very pleased with both of our appointments with Jo. She was very good with J and made him feel at ease on both occasions. I know I came armed with a whole raft of concerns and Jo was very good at trying to get to the main cause of the problem. We both felt that from over 7 years of meeting with other professionals we had actually met someone that was trying to help us.”
(parents of 10 year old boy with dyspraxia and learning problems, West Midlands, May 2017)
“I could literally burst with pride at how well he's doing with the fast acting ones. Flew through 2 big pages of writing yesterday! Verbs and adjectives! I couldn't believe it.
Thankyou Jo. I'm getting glimpses of my amazing boy poking through and it's just brilliant”
(mother of 10 year old boy with newly diagnosed and newly treated ADHD, Worcestershire, May 2017)
“I am so emotional, I had to share this with you.
R was given a special award in school by the headteacher today. For making the most progress in the whole school! Wow just wow.
Sats on Monday which she has worked so hard towards. I am just bursting with pride. Forever grateful for you support.
Warmest wishes xx”
(10 year old girl who was 3 years behind academically, diagnosed with and treated for ADHD and now fully caught up, West Midlands, May 2017)
“Good morning Jo.
I would like to say a very big thank you for all you did during our appointment yesterday. It's such a relief to have a definite diagnosis and a greater understanding. Many thanks ”
(father of 12 year old with newly diagnosed ADHD and very likely autism, Northamptonshire, May 2017)
“We felt that Jo was one of the few professionals we had seen that actually listened to our concerns about our son? We felt he had a complicated presentation and this had meant he wasn't getting any support. We had no diagnosis at this stage. Jo immediately saw what the issues were and gave us prompt feedback. She then fought our corner and ensured our son got what he needed. He has blossomed since and loves his visits. It's been life changing for him and a huge relief for us to finally feel we are supporting him in the most appropriate manner. We are utterly delighted with the service we received from all the team. Becky is always helpful and gets back to me with any queries promptly.”
(parents of 9 year old boy with autism and ADHD, Staffordshire, May 2017)
“Jo and her team were nothing but professional and friendly from the first contact right through to the assessment appointment and during the days afterward. They also responded quickly to any correspondence. We felt Jo really listened to us and was very thorough. She put all of us at ease very quickly.”
(parents of 9 year old girl diagnosed with high functioning autism, Gloucestershire, May 2017)
“Jo was kind and careful, she took the time to listen carefully to what we had to say and she was excellent at talking to and reassuring O. We felt that Jo not only knew what she was doing but actually cared!”
(parents of 12 year old boy with possible epileptic seizures, Warwickshire, May 2017)
“I can't begin to thank you enough for your support, we really really appreciate everything you have done/are doing to help us. It was Kath (school counsellor) who recommended you to us and I am so thankful she did!! ”
(mother of 6 year old with now diagnosed classic-type autism, plus ADHD plus callous and unemotional traits, West Midlands, May 2017)
“She says she feels more focussed and can concentrate for longer periods of time! It's really helped over the last two weeks during the holiday to get stuck in with revision. ”
(mother of 16 year old girl newly diagnosed with and treated for ADHD, West Midlands, April 2017)
“Thank you again for such a thorough and in depth consultation yesterday, we really appreciated all the time you gave us.”
(mother of 6 year old boy with very likely autistic spectrum disorder, Somerset, April 2017)
“Thank you so much for your help today, both yourself and nikki were so helpful and good with F and we are so grateful!
And thank you so much for guiding us through the process so patiently! I'm so glad we came to see you, it was the best decision and it's a relief to have answers at long last.”
(parents of 7 year old boy with the PDA variant of autism, plus ADHD, Staffordshire, April 2017)
“Jo was extremely accommodating and offered to see me despite her clinic being booked up for months. I think Jo sensed my desperation and helped to ensure that my son received the appropriate medication for his reflux after the GP was reluctant to prescribe it. In addition to this, Jo gave me confidence and assured me which as a first time Mum was really appreciated. Jo has a wonderfully warm and pragmatic style and I can't thank her enough for the support and help she has given me in just one appointment and email communication. There are no areas which I think could be improved as my experience was excellent.”
(mother of young baby boy with severe reflux, Warwickshire, April 2017)
“We wanted to let you know that since we saw you in December, and you prescribed Propranolol for O, we have seen a positive change in O's behaviour. The number of violent meltdowns experienced by O has been significantly reduced and if he does experience a meltdown the intensity and duration are also reduced. O has independently acknowledged that his tablets 'are helping him', and this has helped him co-operate with the 'demand' of taking his tablets twice daily.”
(parents of 11 year old boy with the PDA variant of autism after anxiety management including Propranolol for anxiety, Warwickshire, April 2017)
“Dr Jo Jones is a very professional and friendly lady. I felt very comfortable with her and so did D. He commented to me that she was a lovely lady. I felt that I could tell her anything. She was very understanding and obviously knows what she's talking about.”
(mother of 9 year old boy with probable migraine variant, Oxfordshire, April 2017)
“Thank you so much again for your time this morning and for seeing A at such short notice, I can't tell you how grateful I am. It was so lovely to meet you and I'm so relieved that I'm not just being a neurotic mother.
Thank you so much again.”
(mother of 13 week old baby boy with reflux, Worcestershire, April 2017).
“Thanks so much for the assessment you did. From the start it felt really positive that we could arrange appointments directly with you both, and that even though it was a really difficult process, we had a bit of control over when things happened, such as having a separate appointment for L, which really helped.
You were both really good with L and put her at ease which made the process as easy for her as possible.
Now that she has her diagnosis we have been able to talk to her about it and she seems really positive about it. She woke up on World Autism Day and the first thing she said was 'Its World Autism Day Mummy, so I think I'd like to start with breakfast in bed please!' And we had an outing that she chose as a celebration. She is starting to understand why things are difficult for her sometimes and instead of saying 'I'm stupid and horrible' she now says 'this is tricky for me because I have autism', and I can't tell you how much that means, thank you”
(mother of 7 year old girl with newly diagnosed autism, Warwickshire, April 2017)
“Jo was really friendly and easy to strike up a rapport with. Considering my daughter’s anxiety and inability to talk to professionals, Jo had a natural flare to make her feel at ease. Jo was extremely thorough in her examination and subsequent report and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending her to anyone.”
(mother of 16 year old girl with possible Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, severe anxiety and very likely high functioning autistic spectrum disorder, Warwickshire, March 2017)
“Jo was amazing; she was welcoming, thorough, evidently knowledgeable and it was a relief to be moving forward in our quest for answers. C also seemed to be "lighter" afterwards, like he has got a load off his chest or understood a bit more. I also thought the environment was relaxed and informal, which I think helped us all relax and have a more open discussion. I didn’t feel judged, or nervous about laying cards on the table.
The only feedback I could give was that I couldn’t “prep” C and we had had some difficulties earlier in the week, where he didn’t want to attend and I couldn’t brief him on what to expect and I had no clue myself how the morning would go. However, I understand that there might be good reasons for this and it was interesting to see Jo checking C out straight away, as he helped her make the tea and she was no doubt observing him from the outset.”
(mother of 10 year old boy now diagnosed with ADHD and autism, West Midlands, March 2017)
“Thanks for seeing us yesterday, it's such a pleasure to talk to a person who completely understands what the heck we are talking about! Driving back home I felt like a huge weight was lifted. I also wanted to make sure you know what a huge difference your help has made , not only to S, but the family as a whole. ”
(mother of 9 year old boy with the PDA variant of autism and ADHD, West Midlands, March 2017)
“A massive thank you to Jo for the talk on Saturday. It was so helpful and easy to follow.”
(mother of 8 year old boy with newly diagnosed ADHD, West Midlands, after ‘ADHD research chat’ group session, March 2017)
“Thank you so much for your time this morning. It was such a relief talking to someone who "gets it"!”
(mother of 18 year old young woman with newly diagnosed ADHD, Warwickshire, March 2017)
“Just wanted to thank you for last Saturday. It was very informative and from my professional point inspiring.
I've thought long and hard about how some of the other parents were thinking and about how I have felt as a parent talking to school about ADHD over the last few years and I have decided to educate my own staff via inset about my experiences and research. It is so important that teachers have a better understanding. It's a drop in the ocean in the big scheme of things I know, but who knows how many children's self esteem it will protect in the long run.”
(teacher-mother of 15 year old boy after recent group ADHD research chat, West Midlands, March 2017)
“I has responded so well to the medication, meltdowns are now a rarity as opposed to a daily occurrence I can count on one hand how many since he started the pills, I'm so pleased!!!! The 2-3 times he has had issues it hasn't escalated and it was nothing like beforehand. I've been so busy with work as I'm now doing double my previous hours which I'm positive wouldn't have been possible before because I was forever dealing with issues and school etc.
I can't thank you enough for your help it has changed our whole household for the better we are all so much calmer and not walking on eggshells all the time.
Thank you so much”
(mother of 11 year old boy with likely autism and severe rages and meltdowns , now treated with Propranolol, Nottinghamshire, March 2017)
“It went very well. Incredible doctor!
(mother of 7 year old girl with tummy aches and nausea, Warwickshire, March 2107)
“I had M’s parents evening on Friday it was the first time I've come out of one feeling positive , her teacher said he's really happy she's starting to come on she's moved up 2 phonics groups , is starting to understand numbers and can reads more basic words .. still can't write much but is confident it will start coming on soon , she now sits on the rug when asked in the morning rather than wondering around and if he teaches her something she can relay it back the next day. And when she has a 'wobbles' as he out it's she seems to be calming quicker.
He said it refreshing to see medication been used in a way that just helps a child enough in school but doesn't change her at all .”
(mother of 7 year old girl with learning difficulties and ADHD, now treated with medication, Warwickshire, March 2017)
“We really are so incredibly grateful for all you've done and the help you've given in all matters since first contacting you (and the rest of the team also)”
(parents of 8 year old boy with newly diagnosed autistic spectrum disorder and dyspraxia, Cambridgeshire, March 2017)
“Parents we spoke with felt informed and their children were treated as individuals. We rated it outstanding for caring and responsiveness. We rated this service as outstanding.”
Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessing Children and young people’s services, including assessing my clinics, report March 2017)
“Thank you very much for your detailed medical report for A. Likewise it was great to meet you.
Since leaving the clinic two weeks ago we've followed your advice and thankfully, for the whole two weeks she hasn't woken up even once with a cough or a wheeze!! It was great to meet you and the way we have been helped by yourself has taken such a weight off our minds. We definitely feel we made the right choice in coming to see you. Many thanks.”
(parents of 6 year old girl with newly diagnosed asthma, West Midlands, March 2017)
“I would like to say I would recommend Dr Jones to friends and family. She was fantastic with M and discussed in detail my sons diagnosis.”
(mother of 9 year old boy with known autism and severe anxiety and tics, Birmingham, March 2017)

(mother of 13 year old girl with autism and anxiety, Warwickshire, March 2017)
“Whilst under the ADHD medication, J has been a lot calmer. At school his class teacher has said that she's seen things this week that she knows he would of been physical with and it's gone over his head.
He has started to complete his school work and tasks which he hasn't done before, he doesn't complete them fully but he's accepting the work and starting to concentrate.
At home he's been much calmer during the day, when the medication wears off he's violent still and goes back to his prior behaviour which I expected. The progress is good as he's been on the medication around 1 and half weeks. ”
(mother of 9 year old boy with the PDA variant of autism and newly treated ADHD, West Midlands, March 2017)
“Thank you for seeing us today, its such a relief to hear your diagnosis. For me, its a cumulation of 4 years knowing J found things hard but not knowing what and constantly having teachers dismiss my concerns and feeling like an overprotective mum! ”
(mother of 8 year old boy withy dyspraxia and autistic spectrum disorder, Warwickshire, March 2017)
“After a difficult start due to E refusing to take the tablets or spitting them out things are going really well. She now takes them every time and is starting to see the benefits herself. She has stopped trashing the house and swears less. She is still quite verbally and physically aggressive towards us but these incidents are much shorter lived and do not spiral out of control as they have been for a long time. She is also willing to discuss/ reflect a little on how she is feeling albeit at a very surface level. So as you can imagine we are over the moon.”
(parents of 9 year old girl with the PDA variant of autism and severe anxiety and rages now treated with Propranolol, Mid Wales, February 2017)
“Jo you have helped us to understand A's ADHD so much better. You are so easy to talk to and really offer a bespoke service. We feel privileged that A is one of your patients and incredibly lucky that we found you. For years we have tried to figure out the best route for A and have been met with ridiculous obstacles every step of the way. We met you and the rest is history as you sent us on a very clear path of how best to support A. Our lives have changed beyond recognition since meeting you. Thank you so very very much.”
(mother of 13 year old boy with severe inattentive ADHD, Wiltshire, February 2017)
“H is a different child on the beta blockers much more happier and almost no outbursts of either violence or shouting do so it's definitely working.
I can't believe the difference in H it's lovely to be around her and I'm not worried about waking up and facing a very stressed little girl anymore!!”
(mother of 9 year old girl with newly diagnosed autism and extreme anxiety and anger (treated with Propranolol), Warwickshire, February 2017)

“Good Afternoon Jo
I would just like to say a massive thank you for your prompt help, advice and passing us on to experts that can assist O.
My wife and mother-in-law could not speak highly enough of the way you treated O and were very complimentary about the way you delivered your findings. I would never hesitate to recommend you to friends and family.
Finally once again I would like to say thank you for your help in everything from the point of when I originally contacted you.”
(father of 5 month old baby girl with right sided weakness and suspected cerebral palsy, Worcestershire, February 2017)

(mother of 9 year old boy with ADHD and PDA variant of Autism, Coventry, February 2017)
“Dr Jones instantly made myself and A feel at ease. A was very comfortable as he was dealt with in an adult manner, not as a child, 16 can be a very awkward age. I felt she listened to everything we had to say and for the first time for a long while we felt someone actually believed what A was saying.”
(mother of 16 year old boy with sporadic but very severe abdominal pain, Warwickshire, February 2016)
“The reason we as a family feel so strongly about recommending Jo is for us since our first visit we felt listened to and that somebody wanted to help. We finally got answers to questions we had been asking for years but nobody else wanted to answer. T finally felt someone was willing to understand and help. He trusts her completely which is very rare for T and he is a different boy these days now he has the correct support in place. In my opinion Dr Jones can't do much else to improve as she does an amazing job already!”

“I really do want to thank you with all my heart although it is hard to think N's behaviour is not going away. You have pointed us as a family in the direction to find help and learn how we can compromise to make all family members lives a better quality.”
(mother of 12 year old girl with self-harm and severe anxiety, diagnosed with high functioning autism, Warwickshire, January 2017)
“H started his medication at the end of December and I would say we saw a very quick improvement and I would go as far as to say it was "life-changing". There were still incidents of course however in-between incidents H seems generally happier, more relaxed, calmer, sociable with other family members, interactive, communicative, kind, he included myself and his sister in his interests (e.g. voluntarily showing us funny videos on his phone), he asked me to watch films with him and offered to warn me when a violent part was coming up so that I could cover my eyes and he even muted the sound for me! This behaviour is so rare and the difference was amazing - he smiled more over the Christmas holidays than he has for years and I felt that I'd got my son back!!! ”
(mother of 13 year old boy newly diagnosed with and medically treated for ADHD, West Midlands, January 2017)

Thanks again. Your amazing!!”

(mother of 9 year old girl diagnosed with the PDA variant of autism, Worcestershire, January 2017)
“Lovely seeing you again today with A as always. It does make me very glad he's in your care. Having been along to a parents forum a couple of times the nightmare some people are experiencing with monitoring/changing meds through non-private routes sounds very challenging! ”

(mother of 16 year old girl with known autism and newly diagnosed ADHD, Warwickshire, December 2016)
“Thank you for the extremely informative appointment with you last week, it was thorough and overcame any concerns we may have had about medicating N.
N started the medication last Wednesday and, although, it is, of course, early days, the change has been utterly miraculous. He is aware of the change himself and has told us he feels ‘super duper’. He is calm, able to focus and we have had no meltdowns, which were a daily occurrence.
Thank you so much for all your efforts thus far, you have achieved more in a month than we have been able to achieve with the NHS over a period of several years. Seeing the difference in N was highly emotional, he must have been so very lost, poor lamb and you can’t help but think about the thousands of kids whose parents aren’t able to access similar care.”
(grandmother of 8 year old boy with newly diagnosed and treated ADHD, Staffordshire, December 2016)
“Hi Jo and Nikki,
Thank you both so much for your very insightful reports about G following on from our appointment on Nov 18th. Very much appreciated. We cannot believe how you managed to capture so much information in such a short space of time! The reports will be very useful for sharing with other professionals involved in G's care and education going forward. The ASD/PDA variant diagnosis reinforces our thoughts and it is a relief and a comfort to know that we are not 'imagining' it! Thank you. ”
(parents of 8 year old girl with PDA variant of autistic spectrum disorder, Yorkshire, December 2016)
“R is a changed boy: he is excited about maths and loves finishing his work. He has adopted a ‘heads down, let’s get on with it’ type attitude which is the polar opposite of before meds. Today, he impressed his teacher so much that she chose him to open an advent calendar and his gift was a rubber. She had had a competition throughout the lesson to see who was working the hardest, and it was R!
Mr S said that his report will show how much he thinks R has changed: he’s results driven now and has been keen to collect outstanding Good Marks and Good Copies.
On my part, I have seen a big change in R – obvious increased focus, where there was sporadic focus before; he seems happier in general, much more smiley; desire to achieve. It looks like his ‘light have come on’ if you know what I mean!”
(teacher of 9 year old boy with recently diagnosed ADHD just having started medication, Warwickshire, December 2016)

“An update re K. She is doing well. The problems with her peers have reduced dramatically and she is able to focus more on her work. She can still be a pickle at home but now it's more normal teenage stropiness than anything else. There have been no bad side effects
Many thanks ”
(mother of 13 year old girl with ADHD after treatment, Kent, November 2016)
“A quick mail to let you know how M is getting on. Since being back at school and using the medication he has joined the school choir, won the half term cup for best effort in school and been voted on the school council.

It's like being given the picture lid of a jigsaw puzzle - we know what we are trying to make now! At least we have a plan now. Before, we were unfocused and had no idea of the social dynamics at work. Thank you, thank you, thank you. xxx”

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you! It was great to see you yesterday - you immediately engaged with W and were so easy and practical and reassuring! I have been way down in the doldrums (you probably gathered) and worried for W’s future - and you gave me hope, even if an ASD diagnosis is there - that it doesn't have to 'define' him and that he can go out into the world as an independent person and make a contented life. Thank you so much for that.”
(mother of 13 year old boy with growth problems and severe anxiety and anger, Worcestershire, November 2016)
“K has made huge progress since we met in April and we are now able to get out and about as her severe anxiety and sensory difficulties have become more manageable and tolerable for her. Our quality of life has improved dramatically.
We acknowledge the significant role the medication you prescribed (Propranolol) has contributed to this presentation. We have used graded exposure and CBT techniques, and accept that these methods would not have been as effective had the Propranolol not reduced her anxiety sufficiently to allow her to engage with these approaches. ”
(parents of 9 year old girl with autistic spectrum disorder and previously very impairing anxiety, with significant improvement following management with Propranolol, Cornwall, October 2016)

“There can be no doubt that R is significantly improved on the tablets. We now get significant periods of relative calm - he still erupts fairly frequently for the usual reasons i.e. a request/demand/ not wanting to do something/go out etc. and can still be violent and verbally abusive but this no longer goes on for hours and he calms down much quicker. He is also now settled full time in a new school which is a specialist provision but he absolutely loves it which is an all time first!”
(mother of 9 year old boy with constant violent aggression and social exclusion diagnosed with PDA variant of Autism and treated with Propranolol for severe anxiety, Cornwall, October 2016)

“Thank you so much for the help and advice you gave us at M's assessment. The sensory presentation is brilliant and I would like to share this with school if that is ok?
I wanted to email earlier but it's been a bit strange, unexpectidly with a mix of emotions, because I have realised that until a Dr actually told us about M there was still a very, very tiny hope that we were just a neurotic parents and that M was 'normal'. Realistically we knew it wasn't going to be so but human nature is a funny thing. So thank you. You really listened to us and gathered information in such an upbeat way which was appreciated immensley as it is usually so depressing relaying M's story.
You are an exceptional doctor forging on to help people with PDA and complex ASD despite the scepticism that continues to surround the diagnosis. Without Doctors like you and Dr Mills the world would simply stop advancing.
With many, many thanks for everything.”
(mother of 6 year old boy with the PDA variant of Autistic spectrum disorder, Yorkshire, September 2016)

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything. It is such a relief to finally be believed and to be able to explain to E (and B) exactly why E struggles. There is so much we can finally move forward with for E. Your and Judy's expertise is astounding, and so personable too. We were made to feel so welcome and the whole experience from start to finish couldn't be more different from CAMHS. E particularly commented that she thought you were lovely. Thanks again!
Hi Jo! My main point I would like to convey is perhaps selfishly that for the first time since having children I don't feel like a bad father who is letting his family down. My tears were mainly of sadness when Judy confirmed that E has learned to act and mask her emotions in school. I feel profoundly sad for her and wish we had seen you sooner. Finally thanks for several lovely hugs and talking to E in such a special way and helping her to realise that far from hindering her development and self esteem, a "label" and acknowledgment that yes she is "disordered" will help her to understand herself better and give her the relative self awareness to feel proud to be the different, enigmatic charismatic character she is and celebrate her beautiful traits going forward. Much love”

I just wanted to say thank you for meeting with us yesterday. I feel so relieved we have a diagnosis for T as I am hoping this will help him and others understand him better.
I felt like you really heard what we had always had concerns about and that you understood exactly what we were trying to say. I had been very disappointed after the appointment we had with CAMHS, as I didn't feel like they understood the issues at all.

“Thank you so much for seeing A yesterday. We are already making progress! I made up the chart (just working on the BIG one!) and she is certainly sticking to it even only a day in! And her behaviour has also improved ... if she interrupts me when I'm talking to someone else, I politely say to her that I'm talking and when I'm finished she can talk ... no tears, no arguing! Just finds something else to do!
She is very excited about "Magic Sunday" and I've already booked a special photo shoot for her in a weeks time where she gets to be a pixie for a couple of hours! Just me and her.
I really can't thank you enough for what you've done already.”

It's Friday and a good news day. S started his Medikinet XL and we are heading into week 3 now. He's currently on the starting dose of 10mg and already we are seeing vast improvement...most importantly he is too and he's very happy about it.
He's gone from getting constantly upset at every request , to being much more confident in his ability. He's trying new things more readily and everyone has commented on the difference. He tells me he can 'think straight' and feels 'less worried'..he even asked for writing practice ( unheard of) . I could go on ..but I wanted you to know it's going well and make sure we weren't imagining it. The added bonus is that S is recalling facts and information I feared he'd lost completely.
So we are all happy bunnies this end…thank you. I was just so excited I couldn't wait to let you know.
(mother of 9 year old boy newly diagnosed with ADHD and the PDA variant of autism, Staffordshire, January 2016)
“Thank you so much for fitting us in today. Such a relief to be listened to and actually have someone hear what we were saying. Today was hard work, amazing though. I feel as though there was so much more i needed to say, could have said, or expected to say, but you just knew what we saying. It almost feels like everything before no longer matters, yet it hasn't stopped us questioning everything...We both currently feel slightly dazed. To have everything confirmed, and to have it acknowledged as something other than parenting is more than a relief, it is vindication. You and Judy saw immediately what we have experienced for 3 years. Thank you. Both.”

(mother of 7 year old boy with significant learning difficulties and newly diagnosed autistic spectrum disorder and ADHD, Cheshire, December 2015)
Wow!! This is the most extensive and amazing report I have ever seen.
Before I go off on my soap box about how pleased I am to finally be listened to and how amazing you are i do need to ask if a copy of this report has been sent to P’s doctor? And also can we get the melatonin on prescription for him? P has expressed a wish to start his sleepy juice asap and said he will try hard to take tablets.
Now, I must say it was a pleasure to meet with both you and Judy. P instantly felt at ease and has told anyone who will listen how much his doctor 'gets' him. Not only did a weight lift off my shoulders but now I finally know which way I'm going in order to get him the correct help academically and socially. This as you can imagine means the world to me. No parent wants to hear that their child has anything that would make them appear different in others eyes. I've never wanted to label my child in any way but in order to get him the help that he needs for others to understand his additional needs and to be able to deal with them then I have needed to go above and beyond. In doing so not only have a met wonderful people like both you and Judy but my son is proud to call you his doctors.
The reports are the most extensive I have ever seen and others are flabbergasted by the attention to detail as well as the amount of obvious care you both have for your patients and their families.
Thank you so much Jo I could go on for hours but I know you have a job to do. Thank goodness for doctors like you that have patience and a bedside manner that rival a saint in my eyes.
Thank you ”

“Just a quick line to say we have just attended parents evening. I wanted to tell you that EVERY teacher had seen a massive difference in A and were gushing about the 'new ' pupil . They reported her demeanor, her concentration and motivation had improved beyond belief. They said she was like a new person. Confidence improved, engaged and communicating in class with teachers and her peers. Her organisation and return of homework was brilliant too.
So I just wanted to share that with you and to thank you from the bottom of my heart for recognising what needed to be done for A and for enlightening me. It's working, you were so right and we are all thankful.”
(mother of 14 year old girl with very severe and now treated Attention Deficit Disorder, Warwickshire, November 2015)
“Hi Jo, Thank you again for seeing us with B today. We are really pleased we arranged to see you and Judy and feel we have done the right thing for B in asking for an assessment. We have explained to him in simple terms what we discussed with you and he understands. He said "I'm a little bit like Sheldon? Cool !!".
Whilst a diagnosis of ASD is obviously not what any parent wants, we understand how a diagnosis can be helpful in going forward: both with supporting B ourselves and also in ensuring he gets any help he needs at school.”
(parents of 10 year old boy with subtle autistic spectrum disorder, Cambridgeshire, November 2015)

If it wasn't for you, she wouldn't have got the assessments in the first place. Her diagnosis will help everyone understand her a little better and it has really helped her understand why she struggles with certain things. I know we'll have some rocky years ahead but I'm quite certain she'll triumph in the end! Thank-you also for being the first person to take my concerns seriously. ”
(mother of 8 year old girl with newly diagnosed high functioning autistic spectrum disorder, Birmingham, October 2105)
“I'd just thought I would give you an update since A had her asd diagnosis. The Propanol worked fab but is now off it because she's managing just fine because she doesn't feel different and alone anymore. She says she " autistic and proud ! " she now learning many ways to learn how to cope.
The melatonin is working fab and she takes it school nights and sleeps through !
for A getting the diagnosis has answered all of her questions ( ambers ) and it's now ok to think differently. Unfortunately nhs takes 2 yrs + which is unacceptable. For A that lack of help resulted in A taking an overdose, however the future is now bright and A is happy !
Thanks again for everything !”

“Since J has been taking his medicines, his focus is much improved. He is very dedicated towards his work. He is often one of the most focused student in the class…..
I’ve had a couple of conversations with J during the last month about changes I’ve observed. He is still in class, not wriggling, concentration is 100%, listening to teacher instructions. He controls distractions really well from his peers. He will offer answers, peer discussions. Occasionally twizzels a pen but nothing as we saw previously. He feels that he is controlled in class and at ease with himself. He feels his one tablet a day is working for him at the moment. A real transformation. He’s doing really well….
Since medication there has been such an improvement with both concentration and quantity of work produced. His confidence has really grown, discussing topics with his peers, offering answers on the odd occasion in science…..he is pushing himself more both with the level of questions self selected and the quantity and quality of work produced. He is a pleasure to support.”

I’m just sitting here crying like a loon....I had to share with you a piece of work that R handed me that she did at school today. This is the first thing she had ever done that is a) legible b) on the lines c) neat (it’s beautiful) and d) actually finished!!! I literally cannot believe the difference (also sent a pre medication example of her typical standard of work).
I am literally gobsmacked and so so happy and of course grateful to you for your help. Her teacher came out today to say what a fantastic day she had had, she can’t get over the difference in her concentration in the past few days.

“Firstly thank you so very much for your time today. I was amazed at your input and cannot tell you how much it meant to be heard and for Liam to have his needs finally identified with a clear goal of further assessment and support. I’ve come home and had time to digest everything and although it’s a big thing to get towards a diagnosis that I felt he should have had years ago, I feel so very relieved that how he presents has been noted and I feel heard. Amazing insight that you have and you just knew what I was talking about.
It’s amazing what you do and you could certainly teach people elsewhere how to be a child paediatrician with a child’s best interest at heart with how in tune and respectful you are with our children who are different. L loved you and was so comfortable with you. He said you are the best doctor he has ever seen. I told him it’s because you just know what to do and how to do it
A massive step forward for L and he hugged you!!!!!! Omg!!!! Was v impressed.
Again thank you so much and after eight years... Well nearly nine I just feel like finally Liam can have his needs met and we can move forward.
Thank you Dr Jo!!”

“We are on Week 3 of the equasym 20mg and all I can say is WOW!
S has a weekly chart in class and his 3 targets are:
1. To sit ready to learn
2. To remember to put my hand up if I have something to say
3. I complete my work to a high standard and check it when I’m finished
He has had full gold stars for every category EVERY day for the last 2 weeks....which, as you can imagine, prior to these meds was completely unheard of!
We are absolutely delighted for him!”
(mother of 10 year old boy with diagnosed and now treated ADHD, Northamptonshire, March 2015)

You just listened and spoke your mind and I appreciate that a lot. xxx”
(17 year old girl with family relationship problems, Warwickshire, February 2015)
“Dear Dr Jones
It was an absolute pleasure to meet you last week we were both really impressed with your thoroughness, we just wished all Doctors were as good as you and we can completely understand why you were so highly recommended. Although we were expecting the news we received, we still had heavy hearts but it’s great to know now how we can change all our lives for the better, including mine.
The sleep tablets you prescribed have worked beautifully and he asks for them every night now, considering his normal forgetfulness he always reminds us and is asleep in 20 mins. The sleep has made a huge difference already we cannot thank you enough.
This was just a note to thank you ”
(parents of 8 year old boy with ADHD and very likely autistic spectrum disorder, Warwickshire, February 2015)

“Dear Dr Jo,
Thank you so much for today’s appointment and all your help – it was so incredibly useful for us and has been such a relief for me personally.
We couldn’t have asked for a better appointment both in terms of the way it was set out, the level of comfort, etc. You made it so much less painful than it could have been. Thank you.”
(mother of 11 year old boy with very likely classical Autistic spectrum disorder, South West Wales, February 2015)
“You exemplify the best of people who care for children. ”
(senior Paediatric Consultant West Midlands, February 2015)
“J has made real progress since the medication began and there is a noticeable improvement in his urge to fidget and fiddle. He has calmed down at school and is generally an easier boy to control in the classroom environment. He has needed less instruction and intervention from staff in order to begin lessons and seems happier in school.
All staff have noticed the difference in his behaviour since the medication began and where he was once very noticeably the ‘naughty’ boy in the class this has, on the whole, decreased to a negligible level for most of the time.”
(teacher of 9 year old boy originally due for permanent school exclusion, now diagnosed with and treated for ADHD, Warwickshire, February 2015)

(mother of siblings (10 and 3) with possible Autistic Spectrum Disorder, West Midlands, January 2015)

(mother of 10 year old girl with chronic cough, Warwickshire, December 2014)

(mother of 6 year old girl with PDA subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Hertfordshire, December 2014)

(mother of 10 year old boy with bedwetting, North Warwickshire, November 2014)
“Hello, I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything, I gave B the sleepy juice and within half hour he was feeling really tired an went to sleep, until I woke him at 7am this morning, and I didn’t have to keep going back in 10 million times to try and wake him, :–)... all of the children were in bed and asleep by half 8 and I had half hour to myself. Thank you again, :–) ”
(mother of 6 year old boy with impairing ADHD and sleep problems, after prescribing Melatonin, North Warwickshire, November 2014)
“I have had tears in my eyes constantly since he has been on it (the ADHD meds) , he is even using a different voice , I can’t explain how different he is and he is so eager to please and be good and helpful. The propranolol helped a lot with the anxiety but made the ADHD much more obvious and the sensory difficulties , He was able for the first time to realise when things were bothering him , he ripped a label out of his shirt and said it had been hurting him – before I don’t think he knew what was what and neither did we . The anxiety meds meant he would leave the house and try things but it didn’t work as the behaviour meant it wasn’t successful till the ADHD meds started. He was to an extent almost un– manageable and had been hitting spitting and pulling hair of school staff , day one of the meds (ADHD) and he has been an angel and is working again , he doesn’t want break time as he just wants to work. The meds are having an amazing effect at school and home , he is back doing work and all challenging behaviour has stopped . Thank you Jo ”
(mother of extraordinarily un–manageable boy with PDA subtype of Autism and untreated ADHD plus profound anxiety, after first anti–anxiety medication and then ADHD medication was used, Wiltshire, November 2014).
“Thank you so so much for yesterday. Regarding our son, I was pretty floored by how astutely you worked out his character with only a few snippets from us. I have never talked to anyone so insightful, intuitive and switched on as yourself. I struggled to keep up!!! I am so grateful, Jo.”
(mother of 3 year old girl with likely Pathological Demand Avoidance subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, with an older son with probable classical Autistic Spectrum Disorder, West Midlands, November 2014)

“There has been an unbelievable improvement on medication. It was the first parents’ evening ever when we were not told “If only T could concentrate”. There is a clear change on and off medication. Progress is superb and T is starting Grade 1 in saxophone. He could never have contemplated this before.”
(mother of 9 year old boy with diagnosed and now treated ADHD, Northamptonshire, November 2014)

(8 year old boy with likely Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Northamptonshire, November 2014)

We are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday. Things are so much better than a year ago. The ADD meds have improved L’s life immeasurably. So much so that he received a progress prize from school, something unimaginable a year ago.”
(parents of 13 year old boy with High Functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder, Warwickshire, November 2014)

(mother of 10 year old boy with high functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder after asking for additional advice after consultation, Warwickshire, November 2014)
“I just thought I would let you know how G is getting on. Neither her teacher or myself and A can believe the impact it has had on her life. The volume of her writing has significantly increased, but so has her spelling, presentation and she even writes in perfect joined up writing which she didn’t even attempt before! G herself recognises how much it improves her writing, she said before she had the medication, she rarely got more than the date down on the page in her school lessons. My family can’t believe how her confidence has grown, she now happily chats away to all members of the family who she has never uttered a word to before, she constantly jokes around and laughs. It appears that now she can write, it she totally believes in herself.”
(mother of 7 Year old girl with ADHD and Dysgraphia, now diagnosed and treated, West Midlands, November 2014)
“C is doing really well with the medication. His ability to concentrate, complete task and not need instructions repeated numerous times has improved a lot. He also initiates learning tasks on his own, which is fantastic! Thank you so much for your help so far, it’s making such a difference.”
(mother of 7 year old boy with newly diagnosed and now treated ADHD, West Midlands, October 2014)
“Thank you so much for seeing S yesterday, you have helped to put my at rest that it isn’t anything life threatening. S and I both think that you very, very, very nice.”
(mother of 15 year old girl with abdominal pains, Coventry, October 2014)
“You will be pleased to hear that G has made enormous progress at school. The teachers are so pleased with how she is applying herself in lessons, and she has even been offered one of the lead roles in the Christmas nativity this year. ”
(mother of 6 year old girl, diagnosed with and treated for ADHD, South Warwickshire, October 2014)
Thank you for the letter. It was truly amazing to have our questions answered. The longer time went on and the worse C’s difficulties were getting and the more professionals that we were seeing that were just not helping or they were passing us around the more we worried about it there was anything else to it so it was good to have that worry relieved. ”
(mother of 7 year old boy with PDA type of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, seizures, Dyspraxia, severe anxiety and ADHD, Wiltshire, October 2014)
“I wanted to say a huge thank you for helping me get the diagnosis I need to fight J’s corner effectively within the school system. It’s been a huge weight lifted from my shoulders and just getting people to see J as having genuine difficulties rather than just challenging behaviour has made the world of difference in people’s tolerance and attitudes to him. He’s a lot happier as a result!”
(mother of 6 year old boy with Pathological Demand Avoidance subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, West Midlands, October 2014)
“Thanks so much for seeing us early this week and for your report following our meeting. I have to tell you how helpful we felt our session with you was and how grateful we are for your continued support and patience(!) We both left your office actually feeling 99% lighter and relieved about our situation, I can’t really put into words how complex our feelings have been but I’m sure you have been able to tell from my emails that we were at an all–time low. Now we feel we have some direction at last. Thanks again for all your help. ”
(mother of 6 year old boy with complex behaviour problems and possible PDA subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Warwickshire, October 2014)
“He certainly seems to be in a better place and long may that continue. We are really pleased that the original referral was made, otherwise I dread to think where we might have been.”

“Thank you so much for today it was lovely to meet you. For once A (and myself) came away from meeting a professional feeling positive and happy. On our way out A took one of your cards with your email address on it and has put it in her phone case – she did feel at ease, thank you.”
(mother of 14 year old girl with severe anxiety, Warwickshire, September 2014)
“I wanted to give you a quick progress update. S is doing really well, and even did his homework (with some reminding) but concentrated and was diligent. He also received a merit on the first day of school.
Finally, thank you again, you’ve been a fantastic support, and I can’t thank you enough for the decency, kindness and genuine humanity you have shown me and my family. I’ve been through a few personal challenges in my time, and no doubt have a heap more to come, but this one caught me, as you want to do your best for your child and I couldn’t understand what was going on. Thank you so much for what your family has done for mine.”
(mother of 12 year old boy at brink of school expulsion, diagnosed with ADHD and likely Pathological Demand Avoidance subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Leicester, September 2014)

(mother of 4 year old girl diagnosed with Pathological Demand Avoidance subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, USA, September 2014)
“As always Jo, you are so supportive in coming back to me so quickly. You have no idea how comforting this is.”
(mother of 8 year old girl with ADHD, London, September 2014)
“Just a quick update re W.
The new propranolol really suits him.
He is a different boy!
He called you a miracle worker the other day!
He says things like “it is amazing, I am going back to school tomorrow and I don’t even care”
Less anxious, less oppositional, more organised, more able to accept assistance with his organisation, and much much more pleasant to be with.
(father of 13 year old boy, known ADHD and Autistic Spectrum Disorder, after starting Propranolol for severe anxiety, Warwickshire, September 2014)

“Nearing the end of our stay in France – all gone remarkably well. The medication for both boys has improved things for us all massively!”
(mother of 9 and 7 year old boys with now medically managed ADHD, North Warwickshire, August 2014)
“It was of great importance to us that we had received official and professional advice from you as it has helped me put the pieces back together and remain focused on D’s needs longer term. My husband asked me what difference it would make getting a diagnosis and although it won’t change D and at the time i felt unsure myself, it has greatly influenced my husband and the wider family so wanted you to know your time and input made a huge difference.”
(mother of 16 year old boy with ADHD and very likely autistic spectrum disorder, Solihull, August 2014)
“Thank you for the reply, Jo. I have been told repeatedly by the GPs that there is nothing wrong with him and all babies cry so I should just accept this as normal. I can appreciate that they probably see a lot of anxious parents but a proper history was never taken to actually assess the problem and I was automatically assumed to be over–reacting. If the health visitor hadn’t supported me and told me not to be bullied into being quiet then I’d have believed the GP and we’d still have a very unhappy little boy and mother!
I am more comfortable with his behaviour now as the crying is ‘normal’ crying and I can usually associate it with hunger/tiredness etc. and we very rarely get the real screams of pain any more.
Thanks for your help I’m not sure how we’d have got through the last few weeks otherwise,
(mother of 3 month old baby boy with reflux, Birmingham, July 2014)
“Dear Dr Jo,
Thank you very much for the comprehensive report and for meeting with us, we really appreciate it.
Kind regards, K”
(mother of 17 month old girl with failure to thrive, Thailand, July 2014)
“Firstly thank you so much for seeing my Husband and I and of course T last week. To finally have confirmation of T’s ADHD and suspected high functioning ASD from you felt quite overwhelming but a huge relief in the knowledge we can all now do everything we can to help T. I just wish I hadn’t put my faith and trust in the many teachers over the years who came up with various excuses as to why an official diagnosis could never be made and were willing to dismiss T as a lazy, disruptive boy who needs to try harder.
Once again thank you for all your help.”
(mother of 14 year old boy with newly diagnosed ADHD and very likely high functioning autistic spectrum Disorder, Northamptonshire, July 2104)
“I read the National Autistic Society web page for PDA, and it was as if someone had lived with my son for five years and then described him...
Hi Jo, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for today and for speaking to my husband this evening. I have been researching the PDA and yes it definitely links to A. Thanks so much again for your time :)
All our best xx”
(father and mother of nearly 6 year old boy with likely Pathological Demand Avoidance subtype of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, United Arab Emirates, July 2014)
Even though we are no longer under your care, I wanted to email and thank you for your help with our son, B, you assessed him through the Solihull NHS and diagnosed ADHD and referred us to CAMHS for ASD assessment, this has been a very long journey 18mts and more, but we have just had a formal diagnosis of ASD along with the ADHD and dyslexia, I don’t think we would have got this far and got such a good understanding of our little boy without your help, thank you again – you really have made such a difference to B’s future
Thank you so much”
(parents of 7 year old with learning, and behavioural problems, Warwickshire, July 2014)
I just wanted to thank you for meeting with us yesterday and being so wonderfully lovely with E. You put her at ease, which is very rare talent indeed – thank you!
E asked me what you had said and I told her that you thought she was autistic and explained about her reactions to touch and light, as well as her difficulty understanding social interactions etc. She listened (intensely of course) and said that that explained everything, why she always feels different and why people don’t always make sense. Even why deodorant feels sticky and disgusting! It was like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders and she said that it feels really good to know there is a reason for always being different.
Thank you so much, because meeting with you yesterday, allowed us to give her that first seed of understanding and hopefully with support, she can grow in confidence and continue being the amazing person that she is, autism and all!
Many thanks and best wishes”
(mother of 10 year old girl with very likely high functioning autistic spectrum disorder, Warwickshire, July 2014)
Many thanks for your report it was a pleasure to meet you and we really appreciate the reassurance you have given us. S has taken sitting on the potty beautifully and has been doing well since last Thursday and yesterday did a big poo at nursery and one at home after dinner. Much cheering and applause on both occasions:)
Best regards xxx”
(mother of two year old girl with behavioural constipation and ‘holding on’, Warwickshire, June 2014)
“I just wanted to thank you for your time, I am aware that there was a lot to cram into an hours consultation, but I feel that it has helped greatly in getting support from school and being able to move forwards for further assessment.”
(nurse mother of 8 year old boy with likely ADHD and Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Warwickshire, June 2014)
We just wanted to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks for seeing us with T last week: having him diagnosed was like having a weight lifted from our shoulders and so much ‘makes sense’ now. We are greatly relieved that we can now help him and feel like this is a major turning point in his life.
He has already noticed a change in his ability to concentrate and we can see a genuine improvement in his general attitude and focus levels. Just last night, he completed his homework in record time, independently, without any fuss AND he did it brilliantly: we nearly fell over!
Thank you so very much!
Thank you again: we are all delighted with the diagnosis and T is happy (and loving that you called him ‘brilliant’)”
(teacher parent of 8 year old boy, North Warwickshire, June 2014)
“The best thing we ever did”
(father of 9 year old boy now treated for ADHD, South Warwickshire, June 2014)
Thank you so much for today, we have driven home in a daze but with a big weight lifted off our shoulders.

Once again many thanks”

(mother of 14 year old boy with ADHD previously on the brink of permanent exclusion from school, West Midlands, May 2014)
Thank you for the information on Sensory Processing.... it made a lot of sense to me. The Dyspraxia report was VERY useful too. Thank you so much for sending me this information and for your continued support.. I can’t tell you how different life feels right now, since meeting you. You have done more for us in a week than CAMHS have done for us in 6 years!”
(mother of 11 year old girl with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and sensory difficulties, East Midlands, May 2014)
“It was great meeting you yesterday and last night A said to me “I know the depression and everything isn’t just going to disappear but I feel calmer knowing that finally someone else, other than you, understands what I’m going through”.. she thought you were lovely.”
(mother of 11 year old girl with ADD and very likely Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Northampton, May 2014)

(mother of 11 year old boy with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Birmingham, May 2014)
“Hi Jo, We wanted to thank you for taking the time to meet with us and check I over for us the other week.
It is a huge relief to us to know that she is physically and mentally fine – it is certainly a big weight off my mind to know that everything has been considered, and actually she is just being a bit of a madam! It makes parenting so much easier if you know what you are dealing with...
We took I off dairy as suggested, and already there is a massive difference – we haven’t had a single nappy explosion in the last few days, it’s quite wonderful not to have to change her outfits a couple of times a day (since she doesn’t enjoy that!) and she seems much less windy and bloated than she did. She is also not crying in the night at all, as she was doing before.
Thanks ever so much – and for the report, too, I’m amazed you could capture everything so well with I wailing at the top of her lungs! ”
(mother of 14 month old baby girl with previously undiagnosed lactose intolerance, Warwickshire, May 2014)
Thank you again very much for yesterday, we both found the consultation hugely informative and helpful.
It also gave us positive but realistic reassurance and put all of our internet ‘research’ into perspective.
We can both now start to look forwards and enjoy M’s development as well as helping her as much as we possibly can.
It was great meeting you, on a personal and professional level, and we will keep you informed of M’s progress.”
(parents of 6 month old baby girl with right sided weakness, Dudley, West Midlands, May 2014)

His new teachers noticed that he had ‘matured’ in the last few weeks. He was less fidgety and able to follow given tasks much better. His reading has also greatly improved and he can read a whole book in 15 minutes.
The difference at home has been amazing. I have only shouted at him a few times in the last few weeks which is such a relief. We have even been food shopping without D having a ‘meltdown’.
As stated above his reading has greatly improved and we are enjoying reading together. He is also able to stay interested in his homework and complete it with just some help from us.
We are so grateful for your help in ‘rediscovering’ our boy and enjoying our time with him.”

Well this one was a surprise...
While at my first Aspergers Diagnosis I was questioned about if I had ever been asked if I had ADHD, to which I was shocked but thought that the consultant was talking complete trash and that they had lost the plot turns out i was wrong and they were indeed right.
So I got a buy one get one free deal on my labels that day too. not something that I was happy about but as I was putting Aspergers into the back of my head, why not through ADHD in there too.
Again I thought its just a term to explain me, not to help me.
After a little bit of time I was asked about whether I would like to try taking medication for my ADHD. To which I thought, if i take it and it does nothing then pffftttttt I don’t have any issues at all and its a load of commotion over nothing. After I started taking my medication I found all of a sudden I was 100% more productive, I could concentrate on one thing for an extended period of time and I could keep track of what was going on around me much more so than I had ever been able to. In some ways it is good but in others it makes me far to active at working, but then again that is also a great benefit.
I am coming to terms with my ADHD much more than there other two labels. I don’t really understand why but I feel that it is because I have a solution to it. there is something I can actively do to help me cope. its not something that is just a label and then off you go, deal with it.
So its been a few months since I got my diagnosis and started trying medication for my ADHD, and I can honestly say that the medication does make a difference, it has helped me become more productive and able to concentrate on a lot more than I ever thought I could.
There isn’t really much else I can do to deal with ADHD other than the meds.
It has helped knowing that I did struggle with my concentration and had difficulties with my education as a result but I have dealt with it and now I’m doing even better than before. this is the only label I have that has helped me properly”

However, we are so far removed from that place now and alot of that has to do with the support and advice we received from you Jo. C is so much happier and calmer, and although I was very concerned about treating her with medication I have seen how much it has helped her. It just remains for me to say thank you so much.”

“As a family we have seen some subtle improvement in concentration whilst on the tablets at weekends and during half term. L has been able to stick longer with chores and activities. Home life is generally calmer and we are better able to reason with him, particularly around homework and reading where we would say he has been less oppositional.
Also, of significance is feedback from L's rugby coach, who has commented on his increased focus at training. The much bigger issue has always been school and friendships and school has now fed back some very positive news. L's teachers, some of whom found him to be particularly distracted and disruptive are now reporting significant improvements in focus and when working as a team, some have reported that his popularity has grown.
L has been sleeping as well as ever and his weight is stable. This is fantastic news.”

His school targets are all about academic achievement for the first time since starting school – they used to only be about behaviour and nothing was expected from him in terms of work. We now think he might get a few GCSE's!”

“J's Dad and I can only see positives with the medication J is on. Possibly affecting his sleep (difficult to go to sleep) – no side effects or tics come to the fore. As you had said does impact on his appetite but we generally do not give him a tablet at teatime and he then catches up on his food intake , has a good breakfast (generally J eats a lot and burns everything!). J seems to be settling well in year 1 (though early days). He is doing things never possible before such as lining up in the morning, counting up to 20, volunteering quite details activities from school etc.. The only shouting out with made up words and bouncing happens in the morning before the medication kicks in and nighttime. It is quite astonishing. J himself is happy to take what we have decided to call together his 'concentration' tablets. My dad was quite sceptical of medication I think. He is staying with us now and is amazed by the change as well as relieved to see J so much more settled and from his point of view less stressed. ”

Well having completed a full term at school in December, we decided that after much nagging from Jessica we would allow her to try and return to full time swimming after 20 months and see how she got on.
Well she has shocked us all such is her determination, at first she went to some competitions and her times did not change but we knew that this was down to the lack of fitness and stamina. But the past two weeks she has just flew and only just by .30 missed out on a converted regional time (a level below national). She has now caught up with her peers in the club and is swimming as fast if not faster than them, the only thing she is lacking is the self confidence and belief that she can go faster and the overcoming of competition nerves.
Jess has developed with some professionalism the art of power napping and to top it off is excelling at school, and in the exams she has taken already in Year 9 as part of her triple science and maths is gaining A*'s.
We are so very proud of her but we can't thank you enough for all your help, advice and encouragement through those dark months and the way Jess is now is down to your words of wisdom to her and Jess listerning and your support.
We have attached a picture so you can see the amazing transformation from a once tired exhausted young teenager, but we all know that things need watching and now we know the warning signs so know when to say no!
Thank you again”

“I wanted to send you a quick email to thank you for your reassurance and clear explanation of all the results and H's symptoms linked to the possible UTI.
It is reassuring to know she has not actually had a confirmed UTI, and also that occasionally it is normal to find a few red and white blood cells in the urine. This had been concerning me for some time.
Despite H being really tired (she fell asleep 5 mins after we left), she was really co–operative thanks to the relaxed surroundings, your fab calculator (;0)) and calm nature with her.”

We are so very grateful to you and Dr H for your enormous help to A. I was very touched also with your sincere hug (I needed it!!). It was really delightful that you saw A at home and he is very fortunate to have seen you. It was obvious to me that A was very much at ease with you.
I don't know what we would have done without you – you are my 'Star'!”
(grandmother of 17 year old with ADHD, Kenilworth, March 2012)
“Thank you Dr jones for all your help along this very long, exhausting school journey. I am totally shattered but I know It will be worth it for A. It was important I got it right for him as he is different and decision had to be made very carefully.

“Dear Dr. Jones
We are writing to say huge THANK YOU for everything you've done to our son Gregory.
When we first went to see you we really didn't know how to enjoy our lives as Gregory refused to eat and cried to the bottle most of the time not mentioning his weight problems.
We had been to doctors before, but only thanks to you, as only you identified the right diagnose (Reflux) and prescribed us the medicine (Ranitidine drops) that really did help Gregory! Just within couple of weeks Gregory become a very happy child taking his milk and smiling to us instead of crying. During 2 months his weight is growing beautifully within the graph!
We also very appreciate your help in getting all these appointments for Gregorys tests at the hospitals (e.g.catheter test, kidney scan) we would never get these appointments without you.
Also, we don't know how to THANK YOU for the opportunity to always be in touch, whatever the problem you always reply to our messages! This is indeed a great support, knowing that the Top Class Paediatrician is always here, we can't dream for more, don't know how to thanks you for this.
We would be very glad to recommend you to all our friends.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH DOCTOR JO!
With lots of love and appreciation. ”
(Kate Evgeny & little Gregory Kornilovich.)
“C is doing really great, we are so pleased with him and he is a much much happier and content little boy, he has even made a good friend in his class, which is just great, his confidence and self esteem have increased so much.
They have started doing practice exam papers here for their transfer test to senior school and they will be sat in November this year and so far he is doing wonderful and so far is getting fantastic marks. I don't feel he would have been capable of this a year ago.
He saw an OT a couple of weeks ago and he did so well that she does not want to see him again.
So glad that we came to see you, its the best thing that we have ever done, things at home are so much more calm, and an awful lot happier for all of us.
Thanks again for everything.”
(mother of 9 year old boy with educational and behaviour problems, diagnosed with ADHD amongst other things, Northern Ireland, February 2012)
“I just wanted to let you know how well A is getting on at school. Amazing is the word. He is like a different child and his school work is going from strength to strength. He's not having medication at the weekends which can be a little exhausting but well worth it when I see him tucking in to his bacon and eggs on a Saturday morning!
Thank you is all I want to say for your help and support in getting him in to that school and for knowing he had more than just ADHD and for making me feel better as his Mum. Not the easiest job in the world when you get faced with the list of 'isms' as A and I call his difficulties!
So a big thank you.”

You are such an encouraging person!”
(mother of 9 year old with suspected Asperger's Syndrome, January 2012)
“I wasn't sure at the beginning – it's hard to trust someone. As we talked more, I could see that you cared about the whole family and not just my son and one part of his body. Other doctors haven't done that. It means a lot, the way you care.”
(mother of 2 year old boy with multiple disabilities, Solihull, January 2012)

“Jo, You know how through life, there are people who you always remember because they have made some sort of impact (large or small) on your life. It could be in the way you see things now, the decisions you made because of their advice, maybe their weird sense of humour or their acts of kindness.
Well, I have to say that you are most certainly one of those people to us, and it's not for the weird sense of humour!
You have shown passion for your profession, and positivity for health, in a world of information overload and over protectiveness.
My daughter for sure has been so influenced by you and now wants to be a kiddie doctor.”
(mother of two girls I saw with general health problems, Coventry, November 2011)
“Dear Jo, Thank you so much for your help and reports about K. I am pleased to report that K is settling in well to her new school; early days of course but for the moment we are delighted with the improvements we have already enjoyed in K's behaviour. One initial impression is that the school go out of their way to accentuate her positive character traits – a tactic which is universally successful, and expecially so for K.
I am certain that this good start shares its roots with your consultation with you; certainly we as parents are far more confident and at peace with our decision to change her environment. We have greater understanding, clarity and focus in how to respond to K's needs as a result of your advice, which almost certainly has led to an important and helpful subconscious change in our own demeanour. We also have a renewed sense of relief and optimism for K's future. Thank you again, Jo.”

Imogen has been taking the melatonin for the past few nights – its made a massive difference, shes asleep by 8.30 at the latest and isnt having disturbed sleep – her duvets still on the bed in the morning! Cant believe something so simple could make such a difference.
Overall things are going well and I wanted to thank you for explaining everything so well – I think that was what had been missing from previous doctors. I can see what ive got to work with and whilst understanding that it wont be a miraculous cure it is what is best for Imogen. You have a holistic understanding of how Imogens problems affect her”

We have had to fight all the way, spend money etc to get to this point and it isn't over yet. The system is all wrong. However, without your quick intervention and referral to the right people at the BCH we really would not be as far forward as we are so we have so much to be grateful to you for.
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you Jo. We appreciate your input so much and it has made a massive difference to our lives and E's.
I recommend you to friends and family all the time.”

“Thank you so much for your call, I'm sat here in tears after reading the testimonials just because I've finally got some hope. You are the only doctor who hasn't made me feel stupid for my concerns and you haven't even seen us yet. Saturday can not come fast enough, thank you so much for fitting us in at the end of the session.
Just to say a huge thank you again for your time yesterday. We finally feel H is in safe hands. As we said we have not been taken seriously before yesterday other than by our health visitor and had to really push even for a private referral but we are so glad we did. Even though ideally nothing would be wrong with H we feel so pleased that we now know what we are dealing with and can help him. From my point of view I now feel like less of a failure especially from the feeding point of view as it was something I had desperately wanted to do and having successfully fed my daughter for 10 months, I felt such guilt for ‘giving up’ at 6 weeks and like I was inadequate and unable to satisfy him. Now I understand the reasons for his trouble feeding I feel better and whilst I know it's not about me it helps me to feel stronger and more able to be a better mummy!
I'mlooking forward to being able to report a positive change in H's situation but felt I wanted to let you know and thank you for the positive changes you've already had on our family outlook.”
(Mother of 8 week old tremendously unsettled baby, Solihull)

“Jo, his report is a complete turn around compared to previous! The Head has written to him also to congratulate him. I really wanted to show you his report.
He is more considerate and calm in stressful situations.
I have seen a difference between the original dose and the increased dosage. The increased dosage has made a visible difference. He rarely gets uptight but seems able to manage emotions accordingly. He still has teenage boy moments but these are like all teenage boys not exceptional. Comments in his report clearly indicate increased concentration and demonstration of the potential that school and home know he has.
I am so pleased, Jo, with progress so far; I don’t want this bubble to burst! ”
(Mother of teenager diagnosed with and treated for ADHD by me, Rugby area)

“Many thanks for seeing our daughter a few weeks ago and for the medical report that you sent through the post for us. Since she has been drinking Nutramigen we have seen such a profound change in her. She is comfortable and happy and that is absolutely wonderful.
Thank you so much for seeing and treating her. You were very thorough and very kind. Thank you also for your kind comments in the medical report about our 'beautiful' baby. I am very bias and so agree wholeheartedly.”
(Mother of desperately unsettled 4 month old baby girl, Leamington Spa)
It was really nice meeting you yesterday.
Saheba (5) was thrilled to meet you and I smiled when I overheard her later saying to her sister that you were 'like a normal lady' (I am assuming she said this because you were very friendly and walking about, as opposed to sitting behind a large desk in an authoritative manner). Now this is quite sweet: She says when she grows up, she wants to be a Doctor like you and make children happy. So there you have it, one more fan to add to your Club!
Importantly, Saheba feels a lot more confident in her health after the appointment, and so do I. I had begun to worry especially about her tummy pains. I can now relax in the knowledge that these 3 episodes were just bad luck and that now we can just get on with our life as normal. I am a little more clued up about viruses and Bacterial infections now and will bear in mind for future GP Visits, that a swab is useful to have done.
I truly hope that our recent regular visits to the GP will be a thing of the past. Thank you for the confidence you have given little Saheba and myself.”
(Usha and Saheba Chabra, Coventry.)
“Thanks again for all your hard work and for making such a difference to our lives”

(family from Nuneaton with 12 year old daughter with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
“I just wanted to say thank you for spending that time with us Dr Jo. We both felt that we had met an amazing person who knew how to talk to us and reassure us because we were so frightned. You really do know your job too. I haven't met a doctor before who has such a gift with children, she was so happy being with you and normally she fights everyone. You made us feel listened to and we will never forget you and the help you gave us.”
(mother of 2 year old with ‘funny turn’, Stratford on Avon)
“My son's behaviour took me close to a complete breakdown. When he was referred to you, I was basically on my knees ready to throw in the towel! Then a miracle happened and I met you! Slowly you made me understand and accept that there was a deeper underlying problem that needed medical attention. Although I withheld information from you initially, you did your thorough research very professionally and always made me feel so comfortable that it became very easy to converse with you regarding his behaviour.
Your advice plus the recent diagnosis has helped me to accept that he doesn't do things to annoy me on purpose but that's the way he is as he has Asperger's Syndrome. At least I have a reason for his behaviour now and thanks to you, I can stop blaming myself and make sense of it all. I certainly can't predict the future but one thing that I can tell you is that you have changed our present by lifting this ‘dark cloud of blame’! I just felt it was important to let you know how much your diagnosis, your time, your care can affect a young person’s life. You have done a fabulous job with both of us and at least we can enjoy one another now, although if you spent an evening with us, you would probably disagree! Seriously thank you for all your invaluable advice, help and continuing support.”
(Mother of 10 year old boy with ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome, West Midlands)

I understand that I have ADHD and will accept it and take responsibilty for it and also my Diabetes. I promise that things are going to be different now because i need to grow up at some stage and learn to listen. You have really helped me. Thankyou.”

“I think that things have improved massively. In fact, it is almost like she is another child. She is now comfortable for much longer periods, and the discomfort periods are less and less frequent and shorter in duration. She still gets the odd patch, but it is significantly better. She is laughing and smiling (pretty much for the first time). So, a transformation really….So overall, a massive improvement. Still need to keep working at the diet, but our relief is enormous. You are great, thank you very much for helping us so much.”

“Just a quick note to acknowledge the significant improvement noted in Dougal's attention and behaviour in the classroom since April's commencement of daily medication. Indeed to quote the opening of my final school report for him: “As alluded to on more than one occasion in this report so far, any comment about Dougal's progress this year must acknowledge the change witnessed in him post the diagnosis and treatment for ADHD, since its impact on both his behaviour and subsequent attainment has been considerable. One hears a voice inside one's head saying, “If only…”
Dougal's distractibility, defiance and excitability have all been significantly curtailed by the medication. On the rare occasions that he demonstrates such behaviours, the question immediately arises: “Has he taken his medication today?”
Furthermore, Dougal's academic progress has returned to the correct trajectory – compensating for 18 months of what was effectively static performance. He achieved fantastic SATs results in English, Maths and Science. Clearly with his ADHD under control, he has the potential to achieve much more at secondary school.
Dougal and I are indebted to your support. Thank you.”
(Teacher's personal letter to me regarding Dougal Gedge aged 11, diagnosed with ADHD this year)

When we came to see you we were at our wits end with our son’s reflux and you cured him instantly with the prescription of medication that you advised. We felt so helpless watching our beautiful son feeding in agony and spending hours after screaming and being so uncomfortable, once he began taking his medication he turned back to the happy and contented baby we had only seen a glimpse of, who was able to enjoy feeding again. The reflux took over our lives and even made us housebound, we are so grateful that you were able to change our lives.”

My life changed so much after one appointment with you and the change you made to my medicine, (which is now much less than before). It has made a huge difference to me and my family. I am also much happier at school. Thank you.”
(From a schoolboy near Stratford)
